ROAM AMIDST FIVE-THOUSAND-YEAR-OLD TOMBS
Known as the largest cemetery of megalithic tombs in Ireland, the grave cluster of Carrowmore is also one of the oldest in the country.
The Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery is steeped in history, because the monuments date back at least five thousand years.
Over 60 megalithic tombs have been found in this cluster by archaeologists, most of which have been damaged or destroyed.
Many of the tombs are passage graves (one or more covered burial chambers accessed by a narrow passage) or dolmens (where multiple megaliths support a flat horizontal stone or ‘table’).
You should be able to spot at least 30 megalithic tombs during your visit. We recommend wearing good walking shoes as the terrain can be uneven. You’ll find a restored cottage on site which houses an exhibition about Carrowmore.
Entrance fee required.
