A LOOK INTO THE TOWN’S SECOND WORLD WAR CONNECTIONS
Foynes is a harbour town near the city of Limerick, on the west coast of Ireland. The scenic location is on the southern shore of the River Shannon’s estuary.
During the Second World War, this was an important point for transatlantic passenger air traffic. To learn more about Foynes’ role during the war and to immerse yourself in this part of history, you can visit the Foynes Flying Boat & Maritime Museum.
The Flying Boat Museum will take you back to the 1930s and 40s with its full-size plane replicas, photographs and historical items. Walk through the original terminal building, see the radio and weather room, and even try your hand at the flight simulator.
You’ll find the Foynes Maritime Museum attached. This part of the museum covers the maritime history of the River Shannon, the longest river in Ireland.
Both museums are open daily between March and November.
You can also drive a few kilometres to the quaint harbour of Glin, nearby. The quiet village boasts a Georgian neo-Gothic castle and a 19th-century tower.
