VISIT THIS EARLY PORTAL TOMB
Poulnabrone Dolmen is a geological site located in the Burren, on the west coast of Ireland. A ‘dolmen’ is the name for multiple stone megaliths supporting a flat horizontal stone or ‘table’.
Also classified as a portal tomb, Poulnabrone means ‘the hole of the sorrows’. Excavations in the 1980s revealed that there were at least 21 people buried in the main tomb chamber. The bones date back nearly 6,000 years.
Poulnabrone Dolmen is one of the most iconic examples of a dolmen in Ireland. It is also the oldest dated megalithic monument in Ireland, and one of the most photographed. This is probably due to its heritage and accessible location.
Driving along the limestone plateau of the Burren, you’ll be able to admire this archaeological feat as it is near to the road.
After the Cliffs of Moher, which stand nearby, this is the second-most-visited site of the area.
