WHISKEY LOVERS BE WARNED, THIS IS THE PLACE TO VISIT
Kilbeggan Distillery is a whiskey distillery in the town of the same name. It was previously called Locke’s Distillery: you may see the old name on the chimney that rises from the property. Located halfway between Dublin and Galway, this is the oldest licensed distillery of its kind in Ireland.
Founded in 1757, it’s been a popular whiskey all over the world ever since. Through the centuries it endured some tough times, including a fire, food shortages, the impact of the American prohibition, and finally its closure in 1953.
But the community of Kilbeggan rallied around their distillery and came together to save it, making sure it reopened its doors in 2007. While revitalised, the distillery still uses traditional methods and its antique copper stills.
Whiskey enthusiasts should make a stop here on their way across the Irish Midlands, to learn about the history of the distillery and taste its water of life. There are four different kinds of tours depending on your personal preferences.
Entrance fee required.
