VISIT THE CAPITAL OF CONNEMARA
Clifden is a small market town that acts as the capital of Connemara. It is easily accessible from Galway, only about one hour’s drive west.
Located at the end of Clifden Bay, the town sits at the foothills of the famous Twelve Bens mountain range. The mountains rise behind Clifden, giving the town a stunning backdrop.
The skyline is dominated by the two spires of the town’s main churches.
Despite its small population, Clifden is a vibrant town that hosts many activities and festivals, attracting visitors all year long.
Clifden’s rich heritage and landscape have made it a popular stop in Connemara. You may want to use the town as a base to visit the greater region.
You have plenty of activity options here. The many sandy beaches are the ideal starting point for a swim into the crystal-clear waters. You can also go fishing, cycling, walking, canoeing, pony trekking and much more.
Clifden itself is also a nice town to roam about, with its eclectic mix of traditional and modern shops.
In May, the Tour of Connemara cycling adventure departs and finishes in Clifden. In August, the town is the host of the Connemara Pony Show, which includes various contests.
